Welcome to the TRNSYS Users Forum.

The forum is a place where people can interact and have discussions about different topics involving the use of the TRNSYS software package. Here you can post topics for discussion or questions on using TRNSYS and get advice from other users or TRNSYS experts. This forum is not intended for detailed technical support. Users should contact their distributor’s hotline for such assistance.

Some tips for success on using the forum:

  • Follow the Forum Rules posted in Forum Administration.
  • There are categories for different types of topics and questions. Post your topic or question into the proper category.
  • Before posting a topic or question search the existing topics  (and the TRNSYS Users listserv archive or Post archive) to see if a similar topic or question has already been answered.
  • Use a descriptive topic name. Don’t use attention getting subjects, they don’t get attention and only annoy people.
  • State the version of TRNSYS and which add-ons your are using.
  • Include enough specific details for your topic of question to be answered. Just posting “Why am I getting an error?” without describing the specific error and what you are trying to do when you get the error will not receive a response that fixes your issue.
  • Remember when people help you, they are doing you a favor. Be patient, help people out by posting good descriptions of what you need help with, and be polite even if a response does not solve your issue.
  • Moderators may edit your post for clarity or move your topic to a more appropriate category.

Incorrect 3D Geometry Import of .idf File from SketchUp to TRNbuild. How to correct it?

Hello everyone,

After numerous attempts, I decided to seek your valuable assistance.

Applications and Add-ons used:

-TRNSYS 18 (TRNbuild)
-SketchUp 2021
-Trnsys3d add-on (March 2023)

Problem Description:

I am trying to create the 3D geometry of a two-story building for simulation in Simulation Studio. My first step is to import the geometry into TRNbuild. I have followed the instructions in the TRNSYS 18 manual (section 9.3.2.2) and the Trnsys3d user manual. However, I am struggling to import the .idf file correctly into TRNbuild.

Issue:

The 3D geometry appears distorted after importing the .idf file into TRNbuild. Here are the details:

-The geometry in SketchUp looks correct (see "Import_error.png").
-The geometry in the TRNbuild 3D viewer appears compromised after import (see "Import_error.png").
-No import errors are reported, and the volumes and areas displayed are correct.
-The issue might be related to the matching between adjacent faces. The import works correctly for a single zone with no adjacent faces.
-I followed the tutorial steps precisely, including setting the adjacent conditions between floors.

Attempts to Fix:

-I tried removing and redoing the surface matching multiple times.
-Sometimes only one window is distorted instead of the whole geometry. Removing this window reverts the issue to the whole geometry distortion.

Request for Help:

-Do you have any idea why this is happening? Is there something important I should be checking? Please let me know if more specific information is needed.

Thanks a lot,

Marco

Marco,

I have seen that same issue a few times before. Sometimes it is an artifact of the viewer and not an actual problem with the geometry. The method I use for checking my geometry is to create the *.idf file and import it into TRNBuild. Make some checks in TRNBuild to be sure that there are the correct number of surfaces. Choose File: Export TRNSYS 3d file... and save the exported *.idf file with a new name. Open the new file in Trnsys3d/Sketchup and make sure that the geometry looks correct.

kind regards,

 David
