  The way that a staircase affects heat transfer in a building is primarily through convection (air moving up and down the stair). If the staircase in your house is closed off then you can best model it as an airnode of its own that spans both floors of the house. If the staircase is open then it becomes a bit more tricky. The most correct way to approach it (in my opinion) is to add an internal air flow model to your building model (using either TRNFlow or CONTAM/Type97 or Type98). You can then define a horizontal opening and the air flow model will try to compute the amount of air that flows up or down through the stairway.

 If you don't want to introduce the level of complexity of interzonal airflow to the model then I would suggest putting a (fake) floor in the middle of the stairway in Trnsys3d. Once you get to TRNBuild you can define that fake floor as being a single resistive-only material with a very very low thermal resistance.
