<Are the heating and cooling mode calculations 100% independent, or are
both performance maps called in the calculation?>

The individual maps are called solely based on the provided control
signals.  If heating is called for the heating map will be read.  If
cooling is called for the cooling map will be read.  The maps operate
independently so I'm guessing you have issues with the map itself or a few
of your settings.
