Re: [TRNSYS-users] HELP: In TRNSYS 17: How to connect a thermostat switch (Type 2b) to switch ON a pump at a particular temperature range else keep the pump OFF.

Veekay,

Have you read the documentation for the Type 2 differential controller? Page 13 in the Volume 4 Mathematical Reference pdf document (press F1 inside Simulation Studio). This document will help you greatly.

For your case, set the lower input temperature to 50C. Choose a suitable dead band to avoid excessive switching on and off of the pump. Start with T_H=0C, T_L=-2. and adjust if necessary after reviewing the output.

Alternatively, set the lower input temperature to 0C, and the upper deadband to 50C, and the lower dead band to 48C. This will switch the pump on when T_outlet>50C, and switch it off once T_outlet<48C, as above.

Kind regards,

David Sir,

Thank you very much for your positive and prompt response. I need some more clarifications in this regard.

I've a collector whose hot water drain should be started only if outlet temperature is above 50 degree Celsius by switching ON the pump.

Kindly guide me on connections as per attached image.

Thanks a lot.

Regards

Veekay,
There are two ways that Type2 can be used. Most commonly it is used as a differential controller such that it turns on when the difference between two temperatures exceeds a certain amount and then stays on until the difference between those temperatures falls to a different amount. You'd use this in a solar thermal system when you want to turn on the collector if the collector temperature exceeds the storage tank temperature by (for example) 10C no matter what the temperature of the storage tank. This was the method that Alastair correctly suggested.
You can also use Type2 like a more traditional thermostat in which case you typically want to turn on a device when a monitored temperature exceeds (or falls below) a certain set point value. There are proformas for Type2 set up to do this. They are located in Controllers: Aquastat: Heating Mode and Controllers: Aquastat: Cooling Mode. Alternatively you can use Type108 which, while it allows for more than one stage of control, can also be used as a simple thermostat in either heating or cooling mode.
kind regards,
 David

My purpose is to run the pump to discharge after achieving a particular temperature.

Thanks
