Dev,The orientation of the surfaces is defined by the user specifying a slope and azimuth among the components inputs. The component then calculates the amount of solar radiation falling on that surface. If the user defines a surface that faces the ground, there will never be any beam radiation incident on it. If the user defines a north facing vertical surface then again, there will be no beam radiation falling on that surface except early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
I should also mention that Type109 is an obsolete component that was replaced in 2008 by Type15. It is HIGHLY recommended that you change to using the improved Type. If you are using the Type109 "user-defined" data structure then you can change to using Type99 instead of Type15.
