Thanks for the help John but I'm still not sure why you two need to create a tm2 file for TRNSYS.  Simply use the Type 9 data reader to read the external file and a Type 16 radiation processor and you're good to go.

I have created this macro to construct the .tmy2 file from your own data in excel. Long time since I used it, but if I remember right I used the tmy to excel converter to create the template, then after filling the columns with your data, run the macro and bobs your uncle.
Hope you can figure this out.

That depends on what's in a .dat file :-).  What is it?
