The efficiency equation holds true whether the inlet temperature is above or below the ambient temperature. If the inlet temperature is higher than ambient, then the collector loses energy to the ambient. If the inlet temperature is lower then the ambient the collector gains energy from the ambient. The sign of the loss term changes but the underlying equation form stays the same.
