Job/Research Summary
|
An
Engineer I position is available in the Thermal Systems Group of the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) Electricity, Resources & Building Systems
Integration Center. NREL is the nation's primary laboratory for research,
development and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency
technologies. The worker will perform analysis support for the concentrating
solar power (CSP) program as well as other thermal systems activities and
will participate in the development of experimental/theoretical techniques
and approaches.

Job Duties
|
General
Duties and Responsibilities:
•
Supports R&D and/or engineering activities.
•
Performs standard project technical work under direction.
•
Computer operation, interfacing, basic programming.
•
Provides reports on technical work; provides input to technical publications
and presentations.
•
Assists in engineering economic analysis, specifications development, and
project design.
Specific
Duties and Responsibilities:
•
Works closely with NREL staff and other stakeholders to assist in model
development and validation of CSP technologies.
•
Assists in analysis activities for power cycles and thermal storage.
•
Publishes (and presents) project results at conferences, in technical
journals, and in technical documentation.

Required Education and Experience
|
Relevant
Master's Degree or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or,
relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 years experience or equivalent relevant
education/experience.
|
Additional Basic Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
|
•
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other relevant technical
disciplines, or equivalent relevant experience.
•
Demonstrated understanding of thermal systems R&D.
•
Fundamental knowledge of engineering practices, procedures, and concepts.
•
Basic engineering abilities in practices and techniques; applies basic
technical skills and methods to help analyze and solve problems.
•
Demonstrated adequate interpersonal and communication (oral and written)
skills.
•
Must be computer literate including programming, interfacing, and software
development and/or utilization.

Preferred Qualifications
|
•
Master’s degree in mechanical engineering with advanced coursework in
heat transfer and thermodynamics
•
1-2 years experience in related field, including demonstrated ability to lead
projects, work independently, and creatively solve challenging technical
problems
•
Ability to formulate and conduct engineering analysis and implement standard
engineering techniques in a programming environment
•
Experience with engineering tools commonly used in thermal systems analysis,
including:
o
Fortran programming language
o
TRNSYS
o
Engineering Equation Solver (EES), MatLab, Mathematicao Process simulation
package like GateCycle, IPSEpro, Aspen Plus, or Thermoflow
•
Understanding of concentrating solar power technologies
