Most GSHP "design" programs use a simple equation to estimate the impacts
of heat build-up, thermal resistances, etc to predict the peak
temperatures.  Good simulations account for the same factors but also add
the impacts of load diversity, timing and other important factors.

You run a detailed simulation for 20 years and monitor the return fluid
temperatures; adjusting the HX lengths, spacing, etc to keep the
temperature within your bounds.  A detailed simulation is usually more
accurate than the simple design tools.  There are a number of ASHRAE
papers that compare detailed simulations to the design programs.  Look for
McDowell and Thornton ASHRAE papers from about 5-10 years ago.
